Formula One Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2023 What to Watch

This weekend, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix will be held in Baku, the site of the fourth round of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship.

A redesigned Sprint race, which was once the main race's qualifying event but is now a stand-alone event, will make its debut this weekend. However, championship points are still up for grabs for both teams and drivers.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix is held at Baku City Circuit, a Hermann Tilke-designed street circuit that stretches 3.7 miles and features the key characteristics of a 1.3-mile straight and a long pit lining the edge of the Caspian Sea, coupled with some tight corners in Baku's historic city center.

The circuit can be characterized as a hybrid of Monaco and Monza since the long straights and severe braking zones are similar to those at the Temple of Speed in Monza's Royal Park, while the track portion in the old town's winding labyrinth of streets is similar to that of the principality.

Although Baku lacks high-speed corners to transfer energy through the tires, downforce levels are among the lowest of the season. Teams' task is to reduce downforce as much as they can while making sure the tires are worked hard enough to maintain ideal temperatures.

Three of Pirelli's softest compounds—the C3 as the White hard, the C4 as the Yellow medium, and the C5 as the Red soft—have been nominated for the event.

Although the weather prediction predicts great conditions, Baku's recently installed asphalt will present a new learning curve for this weekend.

The customary qualifying session for Sunday's main race now takes place on Friday, as the Sprint race and its related Sprint Shootout qualifying session now take place on Saturday.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leads the Drivers' Championship with 69 points heading into the weekend. Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin sits in third place with 45 points, followed by fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez in second place with 54 points. Red Bull leads the Constructors' Championship with 123 points, ahead of Mercedes-Benz AMG with 56 and Aston Martin with 65. Verstappen, who drives for Red Bull, won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix the previous year.
