Formula One Australian Grand Prix 2023 What to Watch
This weekend, the third round of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship will be held in Melbourne, Australia.
Albert Park Circuit, a street circuit that has been on the Formula One calendar since 1996, is the site of the Australian Grand Prix in its present configuration. Last season, its layout was slightly altered to facilitate overtaking and speed up bends. Its asphalt was also replaced.
The circuit was shortened to 3.28 miles by modifying seven corners and removing two completely, reducing the total number of turns to 14.
This year, there will be a fourth DRS zone added between Turns 8 and 9, which might enable the car to achieve new high speeds.
This year, tire compositions will also undergo a significant modification. The C2 is the White hard, the C3 is the Yellow medium, and the C4 is the Red soft, according to Pirelli's nomination. Compared to the C2, C3, and C5 compounds from the previous year, that combination is a little softer.
Although Melbourne's weather may be unpredictable, the current forecast predicts both Saturday's qualifying and Sunday's race to be moderate with partly cloudy skies. The season's first day event will also be the Australian race.
At the conclusion of Friday's practice sessions, Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was the fastest, ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.
Going into the weekend, Verstappen leads the 2023 Drivers' Championship with 44 points. Fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez is second with 43 points and Alonso is third with 30 points. In the Constructors' Championship, Red Bull leads with 87 points versus an equal 38 points for Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz AMG. Last season's winner in Australia was Leclerc, driving for Ferrari.
