Formula One Chinese Grand Prix 2024 What to Watch

This weekend's 2024 Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit is the first time the Formula 1 circus has returned to China in five years.

Due to travel limitations brought on by the epidemic, the typically yearly race has been postponed and then canceled five times in the last five years. This implies that Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu, who is currently in his third year of Formula One, will be competing on home soil for the first time at this year's event, which is round five of the 2024 season.

The Shanghai International Circuit has 16 bends and is 3.4 miles long. It is renowned for its smooth surface, quick turns, and abundance of overtaking possibilities. The tires struggle to last since they spend about 80% of a lap cornering, and planning can make all the difference. For the event, Pirelli has nominated its mid-range C2, C3, and C4 compounds.

The circuit's construction on reclaimed swampland is one problem. This increases the possibility of ground movement beneath the surface, therefore in order to make the track less bumpy, areas of concern must be ground down and resealed.

The season's first Sprint event is part of this year's Chinese Grand Prix. The Sprint race, which has its own qualifying session on Fridays, is a stand-alone points event. Due to severe rain, the Sprint race qualifying session at the Chinese Grand Prix became somewhat of a lottery. Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes-Benz AMG will join McLaren's Lando Norris at the front of the line for the Sprint race after the latter secured the pole position.

On Saturday, there will be the Sprint race as well as the usual qualifying session for the main race on Sunday. According to the latest weather forecast, the weekend will be gloomy but dry.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leads the 2024 Drivers' Championship with 77 points heading into the weekend. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari sits in third place with 59 points, followed by fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez in second place with 64 points. With 141 points, Red Bull leads the Constructors' Championship, followed by Ferrari with 120 and McLaren with 69. Hamilton, who was driving for Mercedes, was the last winner in China.
