Formula One Emilia Romagna Grand Prix 2024 What to Watch
The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, one of two Italian races currently scheduled, kicks off the 2024 Formula 1 season's European leg this weekend.
Originally planned as a unique one-time event in 2020 to compensate for races that were canceled because of the pandemic, the race has become so well-liked that it is now a regular event on the calendar. It draws a lot of tifosi every year because it's also in Ferrari's backyard.
Last year, severe flooding in the area forced the cancellation of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. It takes place over 63 laps of the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, also known as Imola, and is round seven of the championship this year. It has previously held the Italian and San Marino Grands Prix.
The track layout at Imola is counter-clockwise, spanning 3.08 miles and at times fairly narrow, making it more difficult to pass and emphasizing strategy. Despite having multiple full throttle parts in the current configuration, it has a rough surface and requires a maximum downforce setup. Full throttle is used for more than 70% of a lap.
This year's track saw a few minor adjustments. The asphalt run-off area on the exit of Turns 11, 12, and 13 has been reduced in favor of gravel, and the run-off area at Turn 9 has been eliminated and replaced with a gravel trap. Additionally, the Turn 14–15 chicane exit is no longer a tarmac run-off area but rather a gravel trap.
According to the weather forecast, Saturday's qualifying and Sunday's race should be fine but overcast. According to the tire manufacturer, Pirelli has selected its softest compounds, the C3, C4, and C5, because the forces applied to the tires at Imola are not very high.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leads the 2024 Drivers' Championship with 136 points heading into the weekend. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari sits in third place with 98 points, followed by fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez in second place with 103 points. Red Bull has 239 points in the Constructors' Championship, compared to Ferrari's 187 and McLaren's 124. Red Bull driver Max Verstappen was the previous Imola champion.
