Formula One Saudi Arabia Grand Prix 2024 What to Watch

The 2024 Formula 1 World Championship has moved to neighboring Saudi Arabia for the nation's annual event at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit after the season start in Bahrain last weekend.

In order to prevent conflict with Ramadan preparations, the race will now take place on Saturday rather than Sunday. As a result, the first practice session was rescheduled for Thursday, and qualifying is set for Friday.

Carlos Sainz will miss the event because of an appendix that will need surgery, Ferrari has confirmed. Oliver Bearman, the reserve driver, will take Sainz's place.

The fourth edition of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix will take place this weekend. Only the 4.35-mile Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium is longer than the 3.83-mile Jeddah Corniche Circuit, a street circuit that runs along the Red Sea beachfront in the city of Jeddah and was created by renowned circuit architect Hermann Tilke.

Its average speed in past races has been over 150 mph, and it contains 27 bends, more than any other track on the schedule. The track surface provides a moderate amount of traction, although significant variations in wind direction and sand brought in from the neighboring desert can have an impact.

For the race, Pirelli has selected three medium tire compounds: C2 (white hard), C3 (yellow medium), and C4 (red soft).

The Jeddah Corniche Circuit has a significant probability of incidents that result in safety car periods since it is a street circuit, which means that there are tiny passageways with barriers close by. There have been two red flags and four safety car periods in the three Saudi Arabian races thus far. The new 2025 Aston Martin Vantage will replace its predecessor as the safety car starting with this round.

With 26 points heading into Friday's qualifying session and Saturday's race, Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing is leading the 2024 Drivers' Championship. Sainz sits in third place with 15 points, followed by fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez in second place with 18 points. Red Bull has 44 points in the Constructors' Championship, compared to Ferrari's 27 and Mercedes-Benz AMG's 16. Perez, who drives for Red Bull, was the Saudi Arabian winner last year.

The Jeddah Corniche Circuit will also host the inaugural round of the all-female F1 Academy in 2024. On Saturday, there will be two races, each lasting thirteen laps.
