British Grand Prix What to Watch

We are at the halfway point in the season with the British Grand Prix coming up in a few days. Round 10 of the Formula One World Championship takes place at the Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit in Northamptonshire, England. Silverstone has been one of the tracks that have been ingrained in Formula 1 history. It has always been linked in one way or another to Formula One since the 1940’s. The new Arena Grand Prix Circuit configuration has been used since 2010 and features the new inner field section of the Abbey, Farm, Villiage, The Loop and Aintree corners.

Fast and medium speed sweeping turns that require strong front-end grip at turn-in and decent traction out of the corners are part of a Silverstone lap. Due to the track's rapid sweeping, even a minor error can result in a significant loss of lap time.

Teams run fairly high down-force levels despite the track's high speed since the straightaways aren't very lengthy. The Hangar Straight, which is 770 meters long, is the circuit's longest straight.

In comparison to last year, Pirelli has loosened its tyre compounds and discontinued the orange-marked hard compound rubber for this weekend.

This year, the incredibly soft tire makes its debut at Silverstone. Degradation is high due to the high energy loads through the abrasive surface and fast corners. Pirelli say that they’re expecting a two-stop race, possibly three.
Coming into the race Sebastian Vettel maintains a 20 point lead in the championship standings over Lewis Hamilton. It’s a great little cushion for the German and he’ll be eager to improve his lead coming into the race. Vettel believes the track fits the SF70-H's characteristics and is confident in his chances this weekend. Things appear to be a little difficult on the Kimi Raikkonen side of the Ferrari garage. Raikkonen has come under fire for being a “laggard” by Ferrari Chairman Sergio Marchionne.

Many feel that a sweeping statement like that is quite unfair to the Finn. What ever may be plaguing the Ice Man he has to start showing some performance and needs to start taking points off Bottas and Hamilton if Ferrari want to secure the Constructors Championship as well.

While everyone was focusing on the Vettel-Hamilton Championship battle, Valtteri Bottas has been quietly plugging away on his side of the Mercedes garage and has brought himself into contention for the championship. After his victory at the Austrian Grand Prix, Bottas is now just 15-points behind Hamilton in the Championship standings.

Since the introduction of the current generation of 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engines, Mercedes has been a dominant force at Silverstone. Given their recent success at Silverstone, it's difficult to imagine how they won't continue.

At Red Bull, there have been conflicting tales. Right now, Max Verstappen has been going through a terrible period of unreliability. In five of the nine races this season, he has received a DNF. Although it was not his fault, he will be affected by his most recent DNF at the Austrian Grand Prix. Nothing is more annoying to a racer than this.

As a frequent visitor to the podium, Daniel Ricciardo is having a great run of form.

Whether it's strategy, good fortune, or a spectacular performance. This weekend, he'll be hoping for another podium finish and some solid points. Although the Red Bull car's lack of power is well known, they have made improvements to the vehicle in other areas and are now able to compete with Mercedes and Ferrari up front.

It is always a unique experience to watch an F1 vehicle around Silverstone. It falls within the category of classic tracks, just like Spa and Monza. In addition to being really quick around turns like Copse and Stowe, the new 2017 cars with the wider tires and larger wings will also be outstanding through the Maggots and Becketts. A pleasant drive away from
