Formula One Austrian Grand Prix 2023 What to Watch
The Austrian Grand Prix will take place this weekend at the Red Bull Ring, which is situated in the Styrian hills. The race serves as round 10 of the 2023 Formula 1 season and will mark the return of the redesigned Sprint race.
At approximately 2.688 miles, the Red Bull Ring is one of the season's shortest courses. In addition to its small length, it only has ten bends, meaning that its lap time is barely over a minute.
Three DRS zones and four lengthy straights are present. The latter may be found between Turns 3 and 4, on the ascent from Turns 2 to 3, and on the main straight. Turn 4 is another passing chance, and they aid in overtaking, especially in the braking area for Turn 3, which is the only really taxing test for the brakes.
The Red Bull Ring is regarded as one of the most difficult suspension tests and is infamous for its high curbs. Because of their height and the speed at which the cars are moving, the curbs near the exits of Turns 1, 6, and 7 are most affected.
The track gets faster as the weekend goes on, and the surface has little abrasion and low grip. Finding steady grip is challenging because of the track's uneven patches, despite the asphalt's recent installation. Pirelli has nominated the C3 compound as the White hard, the C4 as the Yellow medium, and the C5 as the Red soft.
Weather is another thing to watch out for during the Austrian round. Temperatures can be a little chilly and the weather can be erratic due to the Red Bull Ring's high altitude mountain position (around 2,100 feet). While Sunday's race should be held in great, bright weather, the current weather forecast predicts Saturday to be warm with the potential of rain.
The Saturday Sprint race format will make its second appearance in 2023 at the Austrian round, following its debut at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in round four. Previously, the Sprint race served as a qualifying event for the main race, but this season it is now a stand-alone event. But championship points are still up for grabs for teams and drivers alike.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leads the Drivers' Championship with 195 points heading into the weekend. Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin sits in third place with 117 points, followed by fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez in second place with 126 points. Red Bull has 321 points in the Constructors' Championship, compared to Mercedes's 167 and Aston Martin's 154. Charles Leclerc, who drives for Ferrari, won in Austria last year.
