Formula One Australian Grand Prix 2018 What to Watch
A new season of the Formula One World Championship has finally arrived after the extended winter break. The Australian Grand Prix, which takes place this weekend in Melbourne, is the first event on the schedule as usual.
Since it's the first race, there's usually a dizzying air of excitement and anticipation at the Melbourne stop, which is one of the most popular on the Formula One calendar. It is held on the 3.3-mile Albert Park Street Circuit, which has 16 turns with a mix of short straights and second and third gear chicanes. It calls for medium to high downforce and decent traction.
It appears like Sunday's race will be held in beautiful conditions. However, rain is a possibility for Saturday's qualifying. The soft, supersort, and ultrasoft compounds for the weekend have been announced by tire supplier Pirelli.
The battle amongst the top teams was fierce in the previous season of Formula One, particularly in the first half. Although Ferrari fought hard at first, Mercedes-AMG's supremacy finally returned. Thanks to upgrades to the Renault power unit the team uses, Red Bull Racing is predicted to make a comeback this season, so ideally the competition will be even more competitive than it was the previous one.
In addition, McLaren is using the Renault power unit this season, which should help the team get back on track after the disappointing Honda years. After every race, we're all sick of Fernando Alonso looking dejected.
The vehicles are largely unchanged from the previous season. However, the new Halo cockpit protection system is unmistakable, and the rear aero has also been made simpler.
Lewis Hamilton, who is currently driving for Mercedes, is the current champion. He is vying for a fifth championship with Sebasitan Vettel of Ferrari. Yes, two four-time world champions will compete this season.
Hamilton led the time sheets following Friday's practice, but Red Bull's Max Verstappen was just behind him. Their times were separated by only 0.127 seconds. Ferrari drivers Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen finished fourth and fifth, respectively, followed by fellow Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas in third. Although Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo had to shorten his practice because of track debris, there weren't many major incidents. Additionally, Williams' Lance Stroll had to stop due to mechanical difficulties with his vehicle.
The retired Felipe Massa has been replaced at Williams by Sergey Sirotkin, Daniil Kvyat has been replaced at Toro Rosso by Pierre Gasly, Pascal Wehrlein has been replaced at Sauber by Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz has replaced Jolyon Palmer at Renault, and Brendon Hartley has taken Sainz's place at Toro Rosso.
