Formula One Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2022 What to Watch
Teams are in Baku, the site of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, this weekend for the eighth round of the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship.
The event takes place at the 3.73-mile Baku City Circuit, a street circuit created by Hermann Tilke. Its main features include a lengthy 1.3-mile straight, a long pit that runs along the Caspian Sea's coast, and some tight turns in the city's historic district.
This makes the circuit a hybrid of Monaco and Monza, with the long straights and severe braking zones reminiscent of the Temple of Speed in Monza's Royal Park, and the track portion in the old town's winding labyrinth of streets resembling the Principality.
This combination of lengthy straights with high braking zones and sharp bends makes setting up the car for Baku a challenging assignment. For the numerous slow corners, teams prefer to provide as much downforce as they can while minimizing drag on the lengthy straightaways.
Similar to Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, where minimizing drag without sacrificing too much downforce is crucial, this necessitates a compromise in the setup.
The track's surface is comparatively smooth, and certain sections are updated every year to fully cover the cobblestones of the old town. Because the average steer angle is so low, relatively little energy is transferred into the tires, making it difficult to get them up to temperature. Because less energy is produced in the corners than at other tracks, teams must rely more on the heat from braking to keep tires heated.
The C3 is the White hard, the C4 is the Yellow medium, and the C5 is the Red soft. These are Pirelli's three softest compounds for the weekend. Despite the compounds being new for the 2022 season, this nomination was the same as the one from the previous year.
The weather forecast predicts bright but mild temperatures for both Saturday's qualifying session and Sunday's race, so we should have a dry weekend.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leads the 2022 Drivers' Championship with 125 points heading into the weekend. Sergio Perez of Red Bull sits in third place with 110 points, followed by Charles Leclerc of Ferrari in second place with 116 points. With 235 points, Red Bull leads the Constructors' Championship, followed by Ferrari with 199 and Mercedes-Benz AMG with 134. Perez, who drives for Red Bull, was the winner in Azerbaijan last year.
