Formula One Hungarian Grand Prix 2023 What to Watch
This weekend, Formula 1 teams are in Hungary for the Hungarian Grand Prix, which is held close to Budapest and is round 12 of the 2023 season.
With a top speed of roughly 192 mph, the Hungarian race is held on the Hungaroring, a 2.7-mile circuit that is extremely winding and undulating. Most of the turns are medium- and slow-speed, making Monaco the slowest.
It is challenging to pass; the first sector, at the end of the main straight, offers the best opportunity of a successful move. Before the track rises toward the second sector, the vehicles brake into a challenging downhill right-hander, which is quickly followed by two more corners.
Tire management is especially crucial because of the low speeds, which increase the dependence on mechanical grip over downforce. The C3 is the White hard, the C4 is the Yellow medium, and the C5 is the Red soft. Pirelli has nominated its softer compounds for the race.
F1 is experimenting with a new tire allocation rule this year called ATA (Alternative Tire Allocation). For the duration of the weekend, each car can only have 11 dry tire sets (three hard, four medium, and four soft) rather than the customary 13. Additionally, used sets must be returned following practice, which reduces the quantity available for the race and qualifying.
Additionally, if a wet tire is not needed, drivers must use the hard compound in the first qualifying session, the medium in the second, and the soft in the third. The current weather forecast predicts pleasant conditions for the race on Sunday as well as the qualifying session on Saturday.
Daniel Ricciardo will also take the wheel again this weekend. The Australian driver, who is now Red Bull's reserve driver, will take Nyck De Vries' place at AlphaTauri for the remainder of the season beginning with the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull is leading the 2023 Drivers' Championship with 255 points heading into the weekend. Fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez is second with 156 points while Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso is third with 137 points. Red Bull leads the Constructors' Championship with 411 points, ahead of Mercedes-Benz AMG with 203 and Aston Martin with 181. Verstappen, who drives for Red Bull, won in Hungary last year.
