Formula One Belgian Grand Prix 2024 What to Watch

The final race before the summer break, round 14 of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship, is this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix.

The renowned Spa-Francorchamps track, which is tucked away in the stunning Ardennes hills, will host the race once more. With average speeds approaching 145 mph and drivers experiencing up to 5 g in certain sections, such Turn 10, which fans refer to as Pouhon, it boasts a long, relentless course that acts as a harsh test for both car and driver.

Spa is the longest track on the circuit, at 4.35 miles, which results in the race lasting just 44 laps, the fewest on the schedule. At Spa, the second sector is tricky, while the first and third sectors have vast straights and flat-out stretches. Finding the ideal balance for the car setup becomes difficult as a result.

The weather is another problem. Because of its size, the track at Spa frequently experiences varying weather conditions in different sections; for example, it may be raining at one end while it is absolutely dry at the other. The current forecast predicts fine, if overcast, weather for Sunday's race and rain during Saturday's qualifying session.

Although some sections have been re-laid in the run-up to this weekend's race, the track surface is on the abrasive side, which causes more tire wear. A fresh track surface awaits drivers from Turn 17 to Turn 4. The pit lane's surface is likewise brand-new.

With high averages on all four corners of the car, the long track coupled with a difficult surface causes some of the season's heaviest tire wear. The C2, C3, and C4 are the mid-range compounds that Pirelli has proposed for the event.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing is leading the 2024 Drivers' Championship with 265 points heading into the weekend. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari is in third place with 162 points, followed by Lando Norris of McLaren in second place with 189 points. With 389 points, Red Bull is in the lead in the Constructors' Championship. Ferrari is in third place with 322 points, followed by McLaren in second place with 338 points.

Since Verstappen has already used up his allotted four engines for the season, it is possible that he may run a fresh engine unit this weekend, which would result in a 10-place grid penalty. Verstappen might still win at Spa because it's a track where passing is conceivable, but it would be a hazardous approach given how well Mercedes-Benz AMG and McLaren have performed recently.
