Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix 2023 What to Watch
The Bahrain Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit this weekend marks the return of the Formula 1 World Championship following the extended winter vacation.
After last season's entire overhaul, the 2023 season doesn't bring many new car designs. However, there is a new race in Las Vegas to look forward to, one of three races in the United States this season, making the calendar 23 rounds long. Along with a returning veteran, the season also includes three new drivers.
American driver Logan Sargeant at Williams, Nyck de Vries at AlphaTauri, and Oscar Piastri at McLaren are among the new drivers. As a driver for Haas, Nico Hulkenberg also makes a comeback to Formula One. It should also be entertaining to see Fernando Alonso, who is making his debut as an Aston Martin driver. Alonso is accompanied by Lance Stroll, who is confirmed to compete in Bahrain despite missing the most recent test session because of a wrist issue. James Vowles and Fred Vasseur are the new team managers for Williams and Ferrari, respectively.
Max Verstappen, the current world champion and driver for Red Bull Racing, will be the center of attention as he attempts to win a third championship. Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes-Benz AMG is also back to try for a record-breaking eighth championship.
As the customary season opener, the Bahrain Grand Prix has replaced the Australian Grand Prix. The drivers will be accustomed to the most recent track conditions because this year's pre-season testing was held at the Bahrain International Circuit, which is situated on a former camel farm in the desert region of Sakhir.
The 3.36-mile course is one of the most abrasive on the circuit. A combination of fast straights and hairpins with strong braking makes up this course. Due to its lengthy combined corner entry that narrows as it approaches the apex—in this case, over a blind crest—turn 10 is one of the most challenging corners.
The track drops away at the apex as drivers start to apply the brakes while navigating Turn 9's wide turn arc. These factors all contribute to the front-left tire being light and raise the possibility of a lock-up.
The technical challenge here consists of engine performance, traction out of turns, and stability under braking. Additionally, tire degradation is a significant factor because of the track's abrasiveness.
C1 is the White hard tire compound, C2 is the Yellow medium tire compound, and C3 is the Red soft tire compound. These are Pirelli's toughest tire compositions for the race. This season, the C1 is a new compound. Pirelli claims that it is based on the C2 compound from the previous year and is intended to help close the performance difference between the range's harsher compounds.
Both Saturday's qualifying session and Sunday's race are predicted to see moderate weather, with Sunday's high temperature predicted to be about 83 degrees Fahrenheit. Although a sticky adhesive material has been sprayed on the nearby sand to assist reduce the possibility, shifting winds may also carry sand in from the nearby desert, which could reduce grip levels.
Teams must also be aware of the track's quickly fluctuating temperatures. The track will be warmest at the beginning of the race and cool as it goes on because it starts at 6 p.m. local time. Charles Leclerc, who drives for Ferrari, won in Bahrain last year.
